Hurricane Helene - Update #3 

September 26, 2024 – 12:00 PM AST 

 

Per the National Hurricane Center: 

Hurricane Helene has left the Yucatan Peninsula and is now 185 km northeast of Isla Mujeres, heading towards Florida. The Mexican Caribbean is still experiencing sporadic rains and high, with some flooding reported on main avenues and access roads.  

 
Storm status 

  • No warnings are in effect for Amstar destinations. 

 

Hotel status 

  • All hotels are operating normally with no reported damage. 

 

Airport status 

  • Cancun Airport (CUN) is open and operational, though some flights are experiencing delays and cancelations.
  • Tulum Airport (TQO) is open and operating normally.
  • Cozumel Airport (CZM) is open and operating normally.

Hurricane Helene - Update #2 
 

September 25, 2024 – 11:00 AM AST 

 

Per the National Hurricane Center: 

Previously identified as Tropical Cyclone Nine, the storm has evolved into Category 1 Hurricane Helene, affecting parts of the Mexican Caribbean, including Cozumel, Cancun, Isla Mujeres, and the Riviera Maya. The region is currently under a Red Alert, experiencing tropical weather, strong winds, heavy rainfall, and flooding. Helene is expected to leave the Mexican Caribbean later today as it moves north-northwest, passing near or over the Yucatan Peninsula before heading into the Southeastern United States. 

 
Storm status 

  • A hurricane warning is in effect for Cabo Catoche to Tulum, Mexico including Cozumel. 
  • A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Rio Lagartos to Cabo Catoche, Mexico. 

 

Hotel status 

  • All hotels are operating normally with no reported damage at this time. 

 

Airport status

  • Cancun Airport (CUN) is open and operational, though some flights are experiencing delays. 
  • Tulum Airport (TQO) is open and operating normally.    
  • Cozumel Airport (CZM) is open and operational, though some flights are experiencing delays.

Tropical Cyclone Nine - Update #1  

 

September 23, 2024 – 16:00 AM AST  

Per the National Hurricane Center: 

Tropical Cyclone Nine is expected to strengthen over the next few days and may become a hurricane by Wednesday, September 25. The storm is projected to move northward across the northwestern Caribbean Sea, approaching the Yucatan Peninsula, specifically impacting areas such as Tulum, Cancun, and Cozumel. Currently, the Mexican Caribbean is experiencing intermittent rain and moderate winds. 

 
Storm status 

  • A Hurricane Watch is in effect for Cabo Catoche to Tulum, Mexico.
  • A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Rio Lagartos to Tulum, Mexico. 

 

Hotel status 

  • As of this advisory, all hotels are operating normally with no change. 

 

Airport status 

 

  • Tulum Airport (TQO) is open and operating normally. 
  • Cancun Airport (CUN) is open and operating normally.

Tropical Storm
John - Update #1

 

September 23, 2024 – 06:00 PM AST  

Per the National Hurricane Center: 

Tropical Storm John is strengthening as it moves closer to the southern coast of Mexico. It is expected to become a hurricane later today and make landfall by early Tuesday, September 23. Storm surges are also predicted, which may cause coastal flooding in the states of Chiapas, Oaxaca, and southeast Guerrero. 

 
Storm status 

  • A Hurricane Warning is in effect for Punta Maldonado to Bahias de Huatulco. 
  • A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for East of Bahias de Huatulco to Salina Cruz. 

 

Hotel status 

  • As of this advisory, all hotels are operating normally with no change. 

 

Airport status 

 

  • Huatulco Airport (HUX) is open and operating normally.

HURRICANE BERYL ADVISORY

 

HURRICANE BERYL - Update #7 

Friday July 5, 2024 –03:00 PM EDT 

Per the National Hurricane Center: 

 

Beryl has weakened to a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds of 70 mph. Tropical storm conditions continue over the northern Yucatan Peninsula. Cancun, Cozumel, Riviera Maya, and Tulum may still experience sporadic rain. 

 

**** MEXICO****  

  

Storm status 

  • All watches and warnings have been discontinued for the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula (Cancun, Riviera Maya, Tulum and Cozumel included). 

 

Hotel status 

  • Hotels are open and gradually returning to normal. No major damage has been reported, and cleaning efforts have started. 

 

Airport status 

  • Cancun International Airport (CUN) is open and operating normally.  
  • Tulum International Airport (TQO) is expected to resume operations on July 7.

Friday, July 5, 2024 –11:00 AM EDT 

Per the National Hurricane Center: 

 

Hurricane Beryl, now a category 1 hurricane, is weakening over the northeastern Yucatan Peninsula. Hurricane-force winds, storm surges, and waves will affect the area for a few more hours. Hurricane and Tropical Storm Warnings remain in effect for parts of the Yucatan Peninsula. 

 

Storm status 

  • Hurricane Warning is in effect for the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico from Puerto Allen to Cancun, including Cozumel 
  • Hurricane Watch is in effect for the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico north of Cancun to Cabo Catoche 
  • Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula north of Cancun to Campeche. 

 

Hotel status 

  • All guests remained in their original hotels; no evacuations were needed.   

 

Airport status 

  • Tulum International Airport (TQO) is expected to resume operations on July 7. 
  • Cancun International Airport (CUN) is open, flights are now en route to the airport.

HURRICANE BERYL - Update #5 

Thursday, July 4, 2024 –05:00 PM EDT 

Per the National Hurricane Center: 

 

Hurricane Beryl, now a Category 2 hurricane, is currently 258 miles (415 km) east-southeast of Cancun and 276 miles (445 km) east-southeast of Tulum, Quintana Roo. It is moving west-northwest at 20 mph (31 km/h). The hurricane is expected to make landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula early Friday morning. 

**** JAMAICA**** 

 

Airport status 

  • Sangster International Airport (MBJ) is currently conducting restoration activities of the Airport’s systems and facilities following the passage of Hurricane Beryl for planned reopening of commercial operations at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 4, 2024. 

 

Hotel status 

  • Hotels have not reported any mayor damage.

**** MEXICO****  

  

Storm status

  • Hurricane Watch is in effect for the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico south of Puerto Costa Maya to Chetumal and the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico north of Cancun to Cabo Catoche. 
  • Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico south of Puerto Costa Maya to Chetumal and the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico north of Cancun to the state of Campeche.

HURRICANE BERYL - Update #4  

Thursday, July 4, 2024 –11:00 AM EDT 

Per the National Hurricane Center: 

 

Hurricane Beryl is now a Category 3 hurricane. Currently, the center of Beryl is 50 miles southwest of Grand Cayman and is moving towards Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula which is forecasted to experience hurricane conditions early Friday morning between 3 and 7 AM, near Carillo Puerto, south of Tulum Airport, as a Category 1 hurricane. 

 

**** JAMAICA**** 

Storm status 

  • All storm warnings have been discontinued. 

Hotel status 

  • All guests remained in their original hotels; no evacuations were needed.   

Airport status 

  • Sangster International Airport (MBJ) and Norman Manley International Airport (KIN) remain closed. The airports are conducting assessments to determine when it will be safe to resume operations. 

 

 

**** MEXICO****  

  

Storm status 

  • Hurricane Warning is in effect the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico from Puerto Costa Maya to Cancun, including Cozumel. 
  • Hurricane Watch is in effect for the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico south of Puerto Costa Maya to Chetumal and the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico north of Cancun to Cabo Catoche.

HURRICANE BERYL - Update #3  

Wednesday, July 3, 2024 –3:00 PM EDT 

Per the National Hurricane Center: 

 

Hurricane Beryl, a Category 4 hurricane, is approximately 45 miles south of Kingston, Jamaica. The eye of Beryl is on track to pass along the southern coast of Jamaica and will bring severe hurricane conditions to the island soon. Beryl is projected to continue westward approaching the Cayman Islands tonight and reaching Mexico’s Yucatan late Thursday evening/early Friday morning. 

 

**** DOMINICAN REPUBLIC**** 

Storm status 

  • All storm warnings have been discontinued. 
  • Only sporadic rain is affecting some Amstar destinations. 

 

Hotel status 

  • All guests remained in their original hotels; no evacuations were needed.   

 

Airport status 

  • All airports are operating normally.  

 

Amstar Staff  

  • Hotel representatives are on duty and assisting customers. 
  • Amstar airport staff are at the airport ready to welcome and transport customers, both arriving and departing.

Per the National Hurricane Center: 

 

Hurricane Beryl, now a Category 4 hurricane, continues moving across the southeastern Caribbean. It is expected to impact Jamaica on Wednesday, July 3rd, and reach the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico by Friday. It has just passed south of the Dominican Republic, leaving behind sporadic rains and winds. 

 

**** DOMINICAN REPUBLIC**** 

 

Storm status 

  • Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Dominican Republic. 
  • Sporadic rains have been occurring and continue across Amstar destinations in the Dominican Republic. 

 

Hotel status 

  • All guests remained in their original hotels; no evacuations were needed.   

 

Airport status 

  • All airports are operating normally.

  • Sangster International Airport will temporarily close tonight, Tuesday, July 2, at 11:59 PM. The airport will remain closed throughout Wednesday, July 3. Following the hurricane, a comprehensive assessment will be conducted to determine when it is safe to resume operations.

HURRICANE BERYL - Update #1 

July 2, 2024 – 10:00 AM EDT 

Per the National Hurricane Center: 

 

Hurricane Beryl, now a Category 5 hurricane, is moving across the southeastern Caribbean and is forecast to continue moving rapidly west-northwestward during the next couple of days and turn westward by Thursday. On the forecast track, the center of Beryl will move quickly across the southeastern and central Caribbean Sea today and is projected to move through the Caribbean, passing near Amstar destinations in the Dominican Republic and Jamaica, and moving towards southeast Mexico this week. 

 
**** DOMINICAN REPUBLIC**** 

 

Storm status 

  • Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the Dominican Republic's southern coast, from Punta Palenque westward to the border with Haiti. 
  • The effects of Beryl are expected to begin between 7:00 AM and 12:00 PM on Tuesday, July 2, from the Altagracia area (Bavaro, Punta Cana, and Higuey) to Santo Domingo. 

 

Hotel status 

  • As of this advisory, no hotel evacuation is expected. 

 

Airport status 

 

  • All airports are currently open with no canceled flights yet.

HURRICANE OTIS ADVISORY 
#3

 

October 30, 2023 – 12:00 PM CST  

There are no remaining meteorological advisories regarding Otis.   

 

Destination Status 

  • Some major roads to Acapulco are open to circulation, with checkpoints along the way to prioritize emergency and humanitarian aid vehicles.  
  • Most communication systems are still down, although a few spots have sporadic mobile service.  
  • Local and federal authorities are still working to restore power and water supply.  

 

Hotel Status:   

  • There is severe damage to most of the destination’s hotel infrastructure.
  • Regarding Hyatt Inclusive Collections properties affected:
    • Dreams Acapulco suffered significant damage. 
  • Company/staff efforts resulted in the organization of a ‘flotilla’ of motor coaches from Mexico City to reach Acapulco to evacuate guests from the resort on Friday 27 October and bring them to Mexico City where they received assistance in returning to their home gateways.  

 

Airport Status:   

  • Acapulco International Airport (ACA) is closed for commercial aviation until further notice.  
  • A humanitarian ‘air bridge’ is open to transport supplies, doctors, and tech support, and to rescue stranded passengers.  

 

Excursions/Activities:   

  • No tourist-related services are operating.

HURRICANE OTIS ADVISORY #2

October 26, 2023 – 10:00 AM CST

 

Per the National Hurricane Center: 

Otis, which made landfall as a category 5 hurricane just after midnight causing significant damage, has dissipated inland over southern Mexico. All roads to and from Acapulco are closed due to mudslides and flooding. Telephone, mobile, and internet services are down. Disaster brigades are working to restore power and communication. 

There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect. 

 

 

Hotel Status: 

  • No official information on damage assessment has been shared yet for Acapulco hotels. 

 

Airport Status: 

  • Acapulco International Airport (ACA) remains closed. 
  • Ixtapa International Airport (ZIH) is open and operating.

Remnants of Lidia dissipated at approximately 4:00 a.m. local time. Today’s forecast calls for clear weather with no rain or strong winds expected. Light damage, including fallen trees and power poles, urban flooding, and connectivity issues are being attended to by Local authorities.

The Center of Fiona is moving toward the northwest away from the Dominican Republic near 8 mph (13 km/h). Weather conditions are expected to improve during the day.

A Hurricane Watch and a Hurricane Warning are still in effect for northern coastal sections of the Dominican Republic.

Tropical Storm Agatha has been downgraded to a Tropical Depression. Remnants of Agatha are expected to produce heavy rainfall across southeastern Mexico during the next day or two.

There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.

Storm procedures are active in the Huatulco destination.

    •  Hotels are operating and suffered no damage
    • Pool areas and some beaches may be closed during the cleaning process
  • Airport Status:
    • Bahias de Huatulco International Airport (HUX) remains closed until further notice. Most National and International flights scheduled for HUX have been canceled

    • No significant damage to infrastructure, mainly fallen trees and some damaged power lines

Tropical Storm Agatha was upgraded to a hurricane over the weekend. Hurricane Agatha is approximately located about 35 miles / 55 kilometers southwest of Puerto Angel, Mexico. It is expected to landfall in Puerto Angel (37 miles / 60 kilometers to the west of Huatulco) this afternoon.

A Hurricane Warning is in effect for the Huatulco area.

Hurricane Olaf was downgraded to TROPICAL STORM OLAF earlier this morning and is located approximately 125 miles northwest of Los Cabos.  The storm will follow a northwesterly track through the rest of today and is projected to turn west out to sea early Saturday morning.

Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for the Los Cabos area.

  • Hotel Status:
    • Guests remained at their original hotels during the storm
    • Some hotel pool areas and beaches may be closed during the clean-up process
  • Airport Status:
    • Los Cabos International Airport continues to be open and operating
    • Some flights have been canceled, and some others are delayed

Hurricane Grace has been downgraded to a Tropical Storm and some additional weakening is likely this afternoon while Grace continues to cross the Yucatan peninsula. The tropical storm should emerge over the southern Gulf of Mexico this evening, and re-strengthening is anticipated shortly thereafter. 

Tropical storm conditions will continue today across the northern Yucatan Peninsula. 

Storm procedures are active in destinations that have been affected by the storm. 

MEXICAN CARIBBEAN: CANCUN, RIVIERA MAYA, COZUMEL

Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the Yucatan Peninsula from Cancun to Punta Herrero (several hours south of Tulum), including Cozumel.

  • Local authorities have reported that there is no significant infrastructure damage, with some uprooted trees and minor debris that have been or will be cleared by the end of the day. There are no restrictions regarding access to both Cancun and Cozumel Airports.

Hurricane Watch is in effect for the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico from Cabo Catoche (north of Cancun) to Punta Allen (south of Tulum).

  • At this time, we do not expect resorts to evacuate guests.
  • Cancun (CUN) and Cozumel (CZM) International Airports are currently open and operating normally but may experience delays during Thursday 19 AUG.

TROPICAL STORM GRACE ADVISORY #3

AUG 16, 2021 –11:00 am EDT 

Tropical Storm Grace has been downgraded to Tropical Depression Grace.  The storm is currently passing just south of island of Hispaniola (Dominican Republic/Haiti) moving toward the west – away from Punta Cana, La Romana, St. Domingo, and Puerto Plata. A west to west-northwestward motion is expected over the next several days.  On the forecast track, the center of Grace will pass between Jamaica and Cuba.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: 

Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the entire coast of Dominican Republic.

Grace is moving toward the west-northwest near 16 mph (26 km/h). A continued west-northwestward motion at a slower forward speed is expected over the next few days. On the forecast track, the center of Grace will move over Hispaniola on Monday, near or over eastern Cuba on Tuesday, and near or over west-central Cuba on Wednesday.

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the Dominican Republic.

TROPICAL STORM FRED

AUGUST 11, 2021 –11:00 am EDT

Tropical Cyclone 6 was upgraded to TROPICAL STORM FRED at approximately 11:00pm last night, tracking west just south of Puerto Rico, heading toward the Dominican Republic on the island of Hispanoala.

As a precaution, we have activated storm procedures in destinations that might be affected along the projected path of the storm.

At 800 am, the center of Tropical Storm Fred was located just South of Eastern Dominican Rupublic tracking west-northwest with maximum sustained winds at 50 mph and is expected to pass over the country later today.

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the Dominican Republic on the south coast from Punta Palenque eastward and on the north coast from the Dominican Republic/Haiti border eastward

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC:

As of 9:00 am

  • Amstar’s offices are open and operating normally.
  • We do not expect resorts to evacuate guests.
  • Amstar’s Customer Service Representatives in hotels are assisting with flight cancellations, early returning home requests, rescheduling excursions and/or issuing refunds.
  • Punta Cana (PUJ), La Romana (LRM) & Santo Domingo (SDQ) International Airports are open and operating normally, but may experience delays during operations today.

Amstar is tracking Potential Tropical Cyclone 6, which is currently located in the the Caribbean basin.

STORM ELSA remains a TROPICAL STORM and is expected to move across central and western Cuba later today and pass near the Florida Keys early Tuesday.  Elsa is then forecast to move near or over portions of the west coast of Florida on Tuesday and Wednesday.

JAMAICA: 

As of 8:00 pm EDT last night, all storm advisories were discontinued for Jamaica.

  • AIRPORT: Montego Bay’s Sanger International Airport (MBJ) is open and operating normally.
  • Amstar DMC staff are at the airports ready to welcome and transport customers, both arriving and departing.

STORM ELSA has been downgraded to a TROPICAL STORM, continuing to move toward the west-northwest. By Monday, Elsa is expected to move across central and western Cuba and head toward the Florida Straits.

  • Most Land Excursions are operating today with water activities resuming operations on Monday, 5 July.

This will be the last update concerning the storm with regards to the Dominican Republic.

A Tropical Storm Warning is still in effect for the island. Significant storm effects are still expected, particularly on the eastern part of the island. Projections indicate the storm continues to track towards the eastern end of the island with a gradual turn to the northwest – heading towards Cuba. By Monday, 5 July, Tropical Storm Elsa is expected to move across central and western Cuba and head toward the Florida Straits.  Elsa is then forecast to move near or over portions of the west coast of Florida on Tuesday and Wednesday.

  • At this time, we do not expect resorts to evacuate guests.
  • Intermittent rain is expected from later today, with minimal threat of storm force winds affecting resorts areas from Ocho Rios and westward along the northern coastline.

HURRICANE ELSA ADVISORY #4

JULY 3, 2021 – 11:00 AM EDT

STORM ELSA continues to move toward the west-northwest as a category 1 hurricane. Elsa will move near the southern coast of Hispaniola later today and tonight, and move near Jamaica and portions of eastern Cuba on Sunday. By Monday, Elsa is expected to move across central and western Cuba and head toward the Florida Straits.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: 

A Hurricane Warning and a Tropical Storm Warning are still in effect for separate portions of southern coast of Dominican Republic. A Tropical Storm Watch is still in effect for the North coast of the Dominican Republic from Cabo Engano to Bahia de Manzanillo.

  • At this time, we do not expect resorts to evacuate guests.
  • Heavy rain, high winds, and rough seas today through Sunday afternoon are expected, mostly further west along the southern coast. Punta Cana and La Romana are expected to be less affected.
  • AIRPORTS: Punta Cana (PUJ), La Romana (LRM) & Santo Domingo (SDQ) International Airports are open and operating normally.
  • Amstar DMC staff are at the airports ready to welcome and transport customers, both arriving and departing.

TROPICAL STORM ENRIQUE UPDATE

JUNE 30, 2021

Tropical Storm Enrique degraded into a Tropical Depression as it passed through the Gulf of California and along the Cabo San Lucas coastline during today’s early morning hours.

Here is an update on the current situation in the destination:

  • All Amstar DMC customers in-destination are safe and secure in their resorts.
  • Los Cabos International Airport is open and operating under normal conditions and Amstar DMC staff are at the airport ready to welcome and transport customers, both arriving and departing.
  • As a precaution; the port is closed and no water activities are operating today.
  • The storm's impact on the Los Cabos area was minimal. Excursions and activities are expected to be operating as usual by Thursday, July 1.

TROPICAL STORM ENRIQUE ADVISORY

JUNE 28, 2021

Storm Enrique - currently a Tropical Storm - affected Puerto Vallarta yesterday and earlier today and is projected to approach Mexico’s state of Baja California in the coming days.   

The security, well-being, and safety of our customers and team members is always, and remains, our highest priority.

The storm’s impact on Puerto Vallarta was minimal with only some heavy rain. Resorts were not evacuated. Excursions and activities are expected to be operating as usual by Wednesday, June 30.

Due to the projected path of the storm – most likely heading towards Los Cabos – Amstar DMC is taking all necessary measures to ensure the well-being of our customers staying in the area. Current forecasting indicates that Tropical Storm Enrique will impact the Cabo San Lucas coastline in the early hours of Wednesday, June 30 – and continue throughout the day.

Amstar DMC will ensure customers are fully aware of all procedures regarding storm safety measures at their resorts.

Some excursions and activities are safely operating today, and it's expected that most excursions and activities will resume operations on Thursday, July 1.
