Tropical Storm Melissa - Update #10

October 31, 2025 – 10:00 AM EST

Jamaica has experienced significant damage, but recovery efforts are underway. Blocked roads are beginning to clear, and fallen trees are being removed to restore access across the island.

Airport status 

  • Sangster Airport (MBJ) remains closed due to structural damage.
  • Kingston Airport is expected to operate flights, though details are still being confirmed.

Community and Guest Status 

  • Communication remains intermittent, but the Amstar team has regrouped and is actively working on a coordinated plan to support and evacuate all customers.
  • Our team is currently assessing our fleet to ensure safe transfers for passengers once airport operations resume.

Excursions/Activities 

  • All excursions remain suspended until further notice. 
  • Sales for all in-destination Amstar services are paused until November 15.

Tropical Storm Melissa - Update #9

October 30, 2025 – 10:00 AM EST

Jamaica has experienced significant damage, including blocked roads, fallen trees, and limited access in several areas.

Airport status 

  • Sangster Airport (MBJ) has sustained structural damage, and it has been reported to be closed until further notice.
  • We are still awaiting confirmation regarding Kingston Airport, which may reopen soon.

Community and Guest Status 

  • Communication remains intermittent and limited, but the AMSTAR team is regrouping and actively working on a coordinated plan to support and evacuate all customers.
  • We are currently assessing road conditions to ensure safe transfers for our passengers once the airport reopens.

Excursions/Activities 

  • All excursions remain suspended until further notice.

Hurricane Melissa - Update #8

October 29, 2025 – 10:00 AM EST

Hurricane Melissa has weakened to a Category 2 storm with sustained winds of 105 mph (165 km/h) and is now entering The Bahamas.


Hotel status 

  • While Melissa’s passage through Jamaica was challenging, we are beginning to receive updates from hotel partners and colleagues.

Airport status 

  • Official sources confirm that Sangster Airport (MBJ) experienced significant structural damage and will remain closed until further notice.
  • We are still awaiting confirmation regarding Kingston Airport, which may reopen soon.

Community and Guest Status

  • Reports indicate that electricity, telecommunications, and internet remain down in most of Montego Bay, but hotel teams with generators are actively supporting guests.

Excursions/Activities 

  • All excursions remain suspended until further notice.

Hurricane Melissa - Update #7

October 28, 2025 – 17:00 EST

 

Hurricane Melissa remains Category 4 storm with sustained winds of 145 mph (230 km/h). The eye is currently located about 15 miles (20 km) east of Montego Bay, Jamaica.


Storm status 

  • A Hurricane Warning is in effect for Jamaica. 

 

Airport status 

  • We must wait for conditions to fully stabilize before assessing the possibility of resuming airport operations.

 

Community and Guest Status

  • Guests are safely sheltering at their hotels, supported by property teams.
  • The local population has taken all necessary precautions and is calmly awaiting the storm’s full passage.
  • In-person representation may be limited due to the hurricane.

Excursions/Activities 

  • All excursions remain suspended until further notice.

Community and Guest Status

  • The local population has taken all necessary precautions and is calmly awaiting the storm’s arrival.
  • In-person representation may be limited due to the hurricane.

The safety and well-being of our customers and team members remains our highest priority. We continue to monitor Hurricane Melissa closely and are working with local authorities, hotel partners, and property management teams to ensure everyone is safe and informed.

Weather conditions

  • Rain has begun across the island and is expected to intensify.
  • Power remains stable in most areas, though outages may occur.

Storm status 

  • Hurricane Melissa remains a Category 5 storm with sustained winds of 175 mph (280 km/h). The eye is currently located south-southwest of Jamaica, with landfall expected Tuesday at approximately 2:00 AM. Heavy rain, flooding, and storm surge are anticipated.

Community and Guest Status

  • The local population has taken all necessary precautions and is now calmly awaiting the storm’s arrival, hoping for the best.
  • Guests who were unable to depart the island are currently sheltering in place at their hotels. Teams are actively supporting guests with updates and guidance.

Hurricane Melissa - Update #4 

October 27, 2025 – 08:00 AM EST 

 

Safety remains our top priority. We continue to monitor Hurricane Melissa closely and are coordinating with local authorities, hotel partners, and airport personnel to ensure the well-being of our customers and team members. 

 

Storm status 

  • Hurricane Melissa remains a Category 5 storm with sustained winds of 150 mph (240 km/h). The eye is currently located 130 miles south-southwest of Kingston, Jamaica, moving slowly westward. Landfall is expected Tuesday at 2:00 AM, with disruptive winds, heavy rainfall, and storm surge forecasted across the island. 

Hotel status 

  • All guests who were unable to depart from the island are currently sheltering in place at their hotels.
  • Property management teams are providing updates and guidance directly to guests regarding next steps and safety protocols.

Airport status 

  • Sangster International Airport (SIA) in Montego Bay closed at 12:00 PM yesterday and will remain closed until further notice. 
  • Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) in Kingston closed at 8:00 PM on October 26

  • All excursions remain suspended until further notice.

Hurricane Melissa - Update #3  

October 26, 2025 – 09:00 AM EST 

 

Per the Meteorological Service: 

Rain is getting heavier across Jamaica as Hurricane Melissa strengthens to Category 4 and may reach Category 5 before hitting the island Monday morning. The storm is moving slowly from the south, with its eye expected to pass over the southern coast Monday afternoon. Winds have reached 220 km/h (140 mph), and up to 30 inches of rain could fall, causing floods and landslides. A storm surge up to 13 feet is also expected along the south coast from late Monday into Tuesday. 

 

Storm status 

  • A Hurricane Warning is in effect for Jamaica. 

Hotel status 

  • No additional updates at this time.

Airport status 

  • Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) in Kingston closed at 8:00 p.m. yesterday.
  • Sangster International Airport (SIA) in Montego Bay will close at 12:00 p.m. today.

Amstar Staff 

  • Hotel Customer Service Representatives are assisting guests this morning: 

Secrets and Bahia: until 10:30 a.m. 

Rose Hall concessions: until 11:00 a.m. 

All other resorts: until 11:30 a.m. 

  • Limited airport personnel are on-site this morning to manage any eventualities before the airport closure at noon.

Hurricane Melissa - Update #2  

October 25, 2025 – 16:00 PM EST  

Per the Meteorological Service: 

Melissa has now strengthened to hurricane category. While the storm is located south of the island and its effects have not yet been felt at the destination, it is expected to bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, and potential flooding to Jamaica over the next few days. 

Storm status 

  • A Hurricane Warning is in effect for Jamaica. 

Hotel status 

  • Guests staying at Breathless hotels have been re-accommodated to Secrets.

Airport status 

  • Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) in Kingston will close at 8:00 p.m. this evening.
  • Sangster International Airport (SIA) in Montego Bay remains operational, with an update on its status expected later today.
  • Several airlines have canceled flights and scheduled additional flights for tomorrow to assist travelers. 

Amstar Staff 

  • The Amstar team is assisting passengers across all areas, including offices, hotels, and the airport.
  • Hotel representatives at Secrets and Breathless hotels will end their shift at 6:00 p.m., rather than the normal 8:00 p.m.
  • Transfer services are operating and being adjusted as needed.

  • All boat tours, Reggae Hill and Mystic Mountain remain closed until further notice.
  • Land excursions are currently operating but may be subject to change based on weather conditions.

Per the Meteorological Service: 

Tropical Storm Melissa is currently forecast to strengthen over the weekend. It is projected to pass near or just south of Jamaica by early next week. Due to its proximity, the destination is currently experiencing intermittent rain. 

 

Storm status 

  • A Tropical Storm Warning and a Hurricane Watch are in effect for Jamaica.

Hotel status 

  • As of this advisory, all hotels are operating normally.
  • Precautionary measures are being taken by oceanfront hotels. 

 

Airport status 

  • Jamaica airports remain open and operational.
  • Some airlines have announced schedule adjustments and cancellations.
